History University

   The formation of the University began in 1964 with the opening of the Educational and consultative Branch of Moscow Cooperative Institute of Centrosoyuz (Central Union of Consumer Cooperatives of the USSR).
   In 1968 the Correspondence Department of Moscow Cooperative Institute began its work on its base, and in 1975 the latter was reorganized into Gomel Branch of the Institute. In 1979 in accordance with Resolution №632 of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Gomel Branch became an independent educational establishment — Gomel Cooperative Institute of Centrosoyuz.
   Since 1992 after the cessation of the activities of the Centrosoyuz Gomel Cooperative Institute (Belarusian Trade and Economics University of Consumer Cooperatives (2001)) is subordinate to and owned by Belcoopsoyuz.
   In 1993 at the joint sitting of the Board of Belcoopsoyuz and the Academic Council it was decided that Gomel Cooperative Institute is the principal educational establishment in the system of cooperative education of the Republic of Belarus including six "Professional Technical School - College" educational and production complexes and one technical school.
   In 2000 the Institute became a leading educational establishment in the system of cooperative education of the Republic of Belarus. The realization of functions of the leading educational establishment gave the possibility to work out the effective system of continuous education according to the "Professional Technical School — College — Higher Educational Establishment" scheme on the level of integrated educational plans and curricula. The major elements of the system are the Council of Heads of Cooperative Educational Establishments of the Republic of Belarus (the Chairman of the Council is the Rector of the University), permanent educational and methodical centers including teachers of technical schools and the University, and the Educational and Methodical Center of Cooperative Education.
   Up to 2005 the University housed the Academic Council for awarding scientific degrees on speciality 05.19.08 "Commodity Science of Manufactured Goods and Raw Materials for Light Industry" which was the only one in the Republic of Belarus. The Council was set up on July 27, 2000 by Order №74 of the State Supreme Accreditation Committee. The Council elaborated and adopted the passport of the speciality.
   In December 1999 the Academic Council Council for awarding scientific degrees on specialities 08.00.01 "Economics" and 08.00.05 "Economics and Management of Branches of National Economy" was opened on the solicitation of Gomel State University named after Skorina and Gomel Cooperative Institute.
   The Qualification Improvement Institute of the Belarusian Trade and Economics University of Consumer Cooperatives provides qualification improvement and retraining for the heads and specialists in economics. The Qualification Improvement Institute was formed on the basis of Qualification Improvement Department founded in 1978, and the Special Department for retraining consumer cooperatives staff founded in 1991 in order to provide the system of consumer cooperatives with high skilled specialists.
   According to Order №234-ak of 30.10.2000 of the Republican State Inspection of the educational system of the Republic of Belarus the Qualification Improvement Institute passed planned accreditation in September and October of 2006.
   In 2001 Gomel Cooperative Institute was accredited as a university type educational establishment and the same year it was named the Belarusian Trade and Economics University of Consumer Cooperatives.
   In 2001-2002 academic year the Belarusian Trade and Economics University of Consumer Cooperatives began training according to new curricula. The teachers of the University took part in the work of the Republican educational and methodical centers while elaborating and discussing educational standards, academic plans and curricula. Improving the training of specialists, the University actively implements new educational technologies into the academic process, the modern level of which is provided by the innovation of contents of many disciplines, elaboration of new courses, special courses and seminars. Scientific researches on "Material-76", "Mathematical Structures-04", "Democracy and Culture-08" Republican Programs of Fundamental Researches and Republican branch themes financed by Belcoopsoyuz innovation fund are conducted at the University.
   In December 2002 the Board of Belcoopsoyuz made a resolution to publish "Consumer Cooperatives" scientific and practical journal on the basis of the University.
   The Business Education Center works at the University. It has taken an active part in the SIFE program since 2002. More than 40 projects have been realized. The Business Education Center has repeatedly been the prize-winner of international and national championships of the Republic of Belarus.
   On May 4, 2005 the University was awarded with the Honorary Diploma of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus.
   In September 2005 Master Training Department was opened at the Unioversity.
   In 2005-2006 academic year students from abroad (Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Sri Lanka) began to study at the University.
   The University has good material and technical base for everyday life, recreation and development of sport. In 2005-2006 academic year two teams (men's mini-football and women's handball) took part in the championships of the Republic of Belarus. In 2007 the mini-football team took part in the supreme league of the National Championship and in the Republic of Belarus Cup Competition.
   The Belarusian Trade and Economics University successfully passed accreditation during the period of October 30 — November 3, 2006 (Certificate №0000314 of December 18, 2006 of the Department of Education Quality Control of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus).
